Hospitality WiFi – When only the best will do – WiFi at the Ritz London

WiFi at The Ritz London | Case Study

Delivering exceptional Hospitality WiFi service to guests with Airangel

For over a century The Ritz London has been the benchmark by which other hotels are measured. It has been home to the great and the good, the intelligentsia, the glitterati and thousands of discerning guests since 1906 and is the byword for luxury, service and elegance.

RELIABLE HOSPITALITY WIFI A PRIORITY

Guest Internet access and Hospitality WiFi in particular, however, is no longer a luxury – it’s now considered a vital part of delivering the highest standard of service The Ritz is renowned for. So when Glenn and Richard Isted, IT managers at The Ritz, were tasked with reviewing their aging guest high speed Internet access facilities, fast, robust and
reliable WiFi access became a renewed priority.

“Our guest Internet connection really struggled  to deal with the nuances of a hotel that was built at the turn of the century,” Glenn explained. “We needed a system that could cope with walls up to twelve inches thick, that we could manage easily and that could guarantee fast and reliable guest access 24/7,”

Glenn was first introduced to Airangel while researching an alternative provider for the
Ritz’s public access gateway. Airangel initially surveyed the hotel and drew up detailed plans on how best to make use of the latest WiFi infrastructure technology.

FULL COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM

Airangel’s Hospitality WiFi solution was specified, which included 180 Ruckus Wireless access points of various models in all 133 bedrooms and suites and throughout the hotel’s public areas. The highly decorative bedrooms and corridors of The Ritz presented particular challenges for conventional cabling.

“AIRANGEL ENABLES US TO
OFFER THE HIGHEST STANDARD
OF SERVICE, WHICH THE RITZ
IS RENOWNED FOR”

INVISIBLE INSTALLATION INSIDE OUT

Airangel overcame this by selecting the Ruckus ZF7025 wall-plate access point for all bedrooms, as it enabled an almost disruption-free, invisible installation on an “inside out” basis. As a result, the thickness of the walls is no longer an issue and the Hotel is now able to guarantee complete signal coverage in every room and suite.

The project was completed in just twelve weeks during which time 160 new cables and a 1Gb fibre leased line were installed providing speeds of up to 400 Mbps for all guests to share.

“OUR GUESTS EXPECT FREE,
FAST AND RELIABLE WIFI
AND WITH AIRANGEL
THAT’S WHAT THEY GET”

“Choosing the right partner, with relevant experience for your particular venue is vital to getting the best WiFi service,” explained Glenn. “The team at Airangel was honest, upfront and straightforward about what they would deliver and how much it would cost.”

BRANDED PORTAL

Airangel now provides The Ritz with a simple one page branded portal through which guests and visitors are able to access the Internet from their preferred device and platform using just their name and room number or a VIP/event code. Airangel’s Hospitality WiFi also allows key staff and event organisers to create and issue easily recognisable custom access codes in advance of events. This enables specific connection parameters and dates to be setup to suit the needs and usage patterns for each individual or group.

Airangel’s Hospitality WiFi solution allows Duty Managers to profile guests while they are online to determine the right level of service and connection speed for each device. With up to 50 Mbps upload and 50 Mbps download speeds per guest, The Ritz takes pride in being one of the fastest connected hotels in London.

Duty Managers can also easily set different charging rates for each connection package, although since the solution has been in place, WiFi has been provided free to all guests and will continue to be offered on a complimentary basis.PERSONAL SERVICE AND FREE WIFI

More importantly for The Ritz, however, Airangel allows Duty Managers to provide personalised support to guests in their rooms should any problems arise with their connection or login process. This means The Ritz is able to maintain the same high standard of personal service with its Guest WiFi that it does elsewhere in the hotel. Should the Duty Manager not be able to resolve a technical problem they have access to Airangel’s helpdesk support 24/7.

“One thing that stands out with Airangel is the reliability of the whole system. Our guests expect free, fast and reliable WiFi and with Airangel that’s what they get.” explains Glenn.

“AIRANGEL WAS HONEST,
UPFRONT & STRAIGHTFORWARD
ABOUT WHAT THEY WOULD
DELIVER AND HOW MUCH IT
WOULD COST”

Public WiFi – All Hands On Deck

WiFi is ubiquitous – everyone knows that.

But is public WiFi really everywhere? Coffee shops – sure. Shopping centres – check. Airports and Train Stations – you bet. Hotels – of course, but usually at a cost. So what about the hundreds of thousands of people who are working  prendre le bateau .

From oil platforms to planes, from ocean liners to container ships , there is a huge demand for a market that is booming but appears to be for the landlubber only.

With an ever increasing reliance on employment migration, seasonal workers are in greater control of where they offer their services. Offering a WiFi service is key to the retention of staff who want to work in seasonal conditions – as long as they can keep in touch with their often far-flung families.

Air and waterborne service providers who can offer “all mod cons” to seasonal staff are already ahead of the curve. And WiFi is now an essential utility.

Providing IT and Network Management services to air and water service providers is a highly competitive market, and one that the UK leads in. Having said that, the provision of a public WiFi service is something that is being overlooked.

Provision of public WiFi is an essential utility, but it can be a revenue generator as well. The future suggests that WiFi will be a free for all, but surely there will be some sort of monetisation. Current trends suggest that this will be in the form of some sort of “big data” transaction. The jury remains out on this.

One isn’t surprised to pay for a fantastic WiFi experience when in a hotel; some might say the same about air, train, and sea. Alternatively, keep it free, and keep your staff.

One thing is for sure – there is no doubt that WiFi is not here to stay…on land.

Why a Professional WiFi Survey Benefits YOUR business

If you are looking into a new WiFi solution a Professional WiFi Survey will provide all the information you’ll need.

You are a multi floor hotel, a holiday lodge park or a community centre… the situation is clear – your business needs WiFi. Your customers want WiFi. This priority, this necessity will not stop landing on your desk until you get this service implemented. You need a Professional WiFi Survey carrying out…

As quoted in the daily telegraph a few weeks ago “remote workers are more concerned about the availability of free WiFi than the quality of coffee in coffee shops, new research has found”. “60 percent saying WiFi was the number one reason influencing their coffee shop choice”.

The same applies to your customers – it reflects the services within your business so naturally you contact providers for an overall price.

Unfortunately you are not just a single floor/single room establishment that just needs one hotspot device to provide coverage. You need a system wide network – a professional survey will be needed for an overall cost.

A Professional WiFi Survey is what you need.

A survey benefits both parties: The Provider and the Business. As a WiFi Provider it ensures we understand your requirements and the network we build matches that. A survey helps overcomes the challenges that the establishment may present – we may find that the material structure within your walls actually stops a WiFi signal from penetrating and limits your coverage. The result? The customer you promised a good service to in a certain area of the building is now dissatisfied before they even enjoy their stay. The overall outcome of a survey ensures that the correct hardware is used, everything is documented and you as a Business can be fully supported by our support team.

Let’s imagine for a moment that you did not want a survey and you wanted to bypass this process with a provider willing to do so based on indicative costs. The network engineers may visit your establishment and they might find that the hardware indicatively allocated does not fit your requirements. They may find something that was priced at £1,000 is actually going to cost £10,000 and because there is no documentation the work they carried out may mean the WiFi you wanted is not actually the WiFi you will get.

Benefits of a Professional WiFi Survey

  • – The network matches your requirements.
  • – To achieve overcoming challenges that may limit coverage or signal.
  • – Heat mapping to prove coverage is achieved.
  • – Full documentation for the present and the future.
  • – The Provider and the Business knows where the required works will be installed.
  • – You can be fully supported by the provider’s support teams.
  • – Correct hardware is used, quoted and fits inside the requirements.
  • – Finally and most importantly you are happy and your CUSTOMERS are happy.

The benefits of having a WiFi professional survey heavily out weighs not having one which is why as a guest WiFi provider we will only carry out network wide service installations after a survey is conducted.

Coffee shops and WiFi

The coffee shop market is expected to grow over the next 4 years, from an estimated 16500 outlets to over 20000, so are coffee shops and WiFi linked ?

Not just via the usual high street brands, but via pubs, supermarkets, independent & artisan outlets. Hand in hand with the demand for more coffee is the ever increasing demand for free WiFi.

In fact in a recent article discovered that remote workers spend far too much time working out of coffee shops, and when they do a staggering 60% of them base their choice of location on the availability of free WiFi rather than the quality of the coffee.

One of Airangel’s Directors is a fully trained barista so we can help you with the quality of your coffee but we’d rather help you provide quality WiFi.

In-Store retail WiFi – Why in-store WiFi is now essential to all retailers

Retail customers need and expect In-Store Retail WiFi  internet to be available, everywhere, all the time.

Great, but how can you as a retailer (no matter even if you are an independent store) really start to benefit from the provision of in-store WiFi.

What really is in it for you?

In-Store retail WiFi will drive a huge number of benefits to you:

• Greater dwell time and increased footfall. Offering free WiFi will not only drive in customers it will encourage them to stay longer. A recent survey showed that if a store offers free WiFi almost 70% would visit again, stay longer and visit more often.

• Improved customer satisfaction and loyalty.

The same BT sponsored survey showed 34% of people use WiFi to download discountstore and ecommerce strategies!

Deep customer insight. Airangel WiFi, unlike many of the so called ‘big providers’ provides detailed reports on your customers’ WiFi use, so you now know who is entering your stores, and when enabling to personalise your messages and campaigns to them.

So why do shoppers want WiFi. Many independent stores may well question the need to provide this service (which could easily cost less than a pound a day!) wi-fi?

“Before I buy something I always check
the prices. Wi-fi makes it easier.”

“It’s a much better shopping experience.”

It’s all about improving the customer experience. As multichannel shopping continues to evolve, WiFi is changing the way consumers buy. Then following stats drom the same BT survey make it clear why the provision of Retail WiFi is essential:

• 67% of those we surveyed use the internet when they shop

• 38% use wi-fi when they shop to update socialmedia. Posting pictures of prospective purchases has become a Facebook trend. The ability to log-in via Social media is therefore a must. Social WiFi is the ay forward.

Nearly half the respondents to the  survey said they use WiFi to help them compare prices, read product reviews and browse deals. Shying away from WiFi by worrying that customers will turn to competitors is a little like King Canute trying to turn back the sea. Embracing in-store WiFi is now an essential part of every retailers armoury.

Don’t be fazed by the complexity of installation. The Airangel solutions are more often than not just plug and play and ready to deliver all these advantages straight out of the box. Legally compliant, family friendly (we incorporate the latest content filtering) industry leading insight and service just like that.
